'The United States on Wednesday named a diplomat to focus on the Great Lakes region of Africa in a bid to devote more attention on bringing peace to the troubled DR Congo and its neighbors, AFP reported.
In an announcement long sought by activist groups, the State Department said it was naming Barrie Walkley, a career diplomat with long experience in Africa, to the new role of special advisor for the Great Lakes region.
Walkley will work "to ensure that the United States provides all the support we can to help the Great Lakes region fulfill its potential and become an area of sustainable peace and security," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said. '
